Bone tissue is a unique organic composite material, exhibiting a multiscale system of organization. This unique architecture builds its primary function – protection and capacity to resist external forces. Our knowledge of intra- and inter-individual variations (size, orientation, and spatial arrangement of structural units) of bone has been scarce. This limits our ability to understand mechanisms of skeletal damage. The project aims to improve our understanding of bone organization and mechanical resistance using bone samples with identified skeletal damage and experiments with animal models as human proxies. For that purpose, advanced imaging technologies (CT, microCT), in conjunction with traditional histological and histomorphometric approach will be employed.
